One of the most beautiful displays of fireworks on the ground are called fountains. These pyrotechnic products are designed to sit in a secure location and spew out showers of colored sparks for an audience to enjoy. Think of a shaken up soda can that has been popped open, but instead of an explosion of sugary liquid, the result is an exquisite jet of sparks in single or multiple colors lasting anywhere from 5 seconds to 60 seconds or more. One of the largest fountains on the consumer firework market features a behemoth 500 grams of pyrotechnic compounds and lasts a full minute and a half.

Fountains are sometimes referred to as “gerbs” in the industry. This type of firework is made by filling a thick-walled tube featuring a narrowed “choke” with a compound of pyrotechnic chemicals. When lit, the chemicals burn and the design of the choke creates a strong pressure inside the tube which forces the fiery contents up and out. Without the choke creating pressure, the spray of sparks would only weakly flow out and create a pretty lame display

There is sure to be a fountain that will make your celebrations overflow with sparks and style. Available in single colors, changing colors, crackling, whistles and other fun features, fountain fireworks are real crowd-pleasers. To create changing colors and effects the fountain composition can be layered with various pyrotechnic materials that are released as each layer is burned down.

This firework variety is popular at sporting events, concerts, weddings and other events where a background of sparks is preferred to an overhead display where people have to lift their heads up away from the performers. Fountains also make a great complement when running at the same time as your aerial display.  When ordering fountains and gerbs for your show, please note that many are measured by their burn time and height – a 5x5 fountain burns for 5 seconds and reaches up to 5 feet.

When lighting your gerb, keep public safety a top priority by following the local laws regarding the use of these items in your particular area – the stipulations vary widely from place to place. Additionally, for your personal safety and the well-being of your audience, always follow the manufacturer’s directions for lighting the fountain and maintaining a proper distance. Even the most tame-looking items can cause bodily harm if they malfunction and are not being properly handled.
